Santa Maria di Settefonti

Santa Maria di Settefonti

The earliest list of 84 “fumanti” (families) dates back to 1249, but the Castle of “Stifunti”-  which owes its name to the presence of 7 spring sources – which would later become the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, is even older (1105).

Located a short distance from the Abbadessa pass, the castle dominated the Idice and Quaderna valleys, allowing control of the two areas subjected to Bologna and Imola, respectively. The transition from castle to church is attested between 1385 and 1428; the church was then rebuilt in 1691. Despite the WWII events, the facade, bell tower and basement rooms still remain visible.
